The domestication of youtube..?

Sun Jul 5, 2009, 8:26 AM
If you've gone to youtube recently you may have noticed a trend of shows popping up there..not by people with usernames like ladiesman217 but actual producers and/or distributors of certain programs.

Case in point: World Events Productions, best known for such series as Voltron, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, and others, have started posting episodes of the former on the page they've set up some time ago..

Am I the only one who's wondering whether this is a good or bad thing?

  • Reading: The Edge of Reason by Melinda M. Snodgrass
  • Watching: Transformers (2007) on DVD
  • Playing: Ape Escape 3 on PS2

I kinda think it is a bad idea for stuff that is widely available.

If WEP did this back before Voltron and GoLion was released on DVD, this would have been a great idea.

I am in favor of this kind of thing for obscure stuff.

Just my 2¢

My concern is how is this gonna affect other stuff posted on youtube.

Mind you, there are rules re: copyrighted materials posted there, and as I'm sure you're aware very strictly enforced to others' detriment.

What really concerns me is how will this affect amateur (as opposed to professional) stuff being posted there..will they get pushed by the wayside as more well-known or semi well-known goes up there..?

Keep in mind there are other vod content sites like hulu.com that specialize in posting selected TV series free of charge, so it's probably a matter of follow-the-leader..

And that's my 2 cents..
